Southern Monterey County Foundation Awards Grants
Monterey County, California — The Southern Monterey County Foundation (SMCF) granted $27,900 to 19 nonprofit organizations in December 2019 for projects, programs and capital projects in 2020 serving the residents of King City and points south.
To date, $121,500 has been granted from the SMCF for organizations providing community-based services aimed at improving the quality of life for Southern Monterey County residents. The SMCF, now in its sixth year, is an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County.
There is great need in King City and our surrounding area, our community pulls together though the Southern Monterey County Foundation to support programs that might not otherwise happen. 2019 Southern Monterey County Foundation Grantees:
- Campaign for the Preservation of Mission San Antonio de Padua for Phase 5 of the retrofit, repair and preservation of the historic mission
- City of Greenfield for Greenfield Community Science Workshop to support South Monterey County Mobile Science Program in King City, San Ardo and San Lucas
- City of King Recreation Department for the city’s Free Swimming Lessons Program
- Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries for Year-round Homework Centers to support literacy in children
- Girls Incorporated of the Central Coast for Growing Together, a program to increase positive communication between young girls and their parents or guardians at elementary and middle schools in King City
- Hartnell College Foundation for the South County Lending Library, to provide students with semester-long access to textbooks for classes offered at the Hartnell College King City Education Center
- King City Boxing Club to provide positive activities for youth
- Kinship Center for enrichment camps that will strengthen the mental health and social well-being of children and families
- Legal Services for Seniors for no-cost legal services for Southern Monterey County seniors
- Monterey County Agricultural & Rural Life Museum to support the annual 4th Grade History Jamboree, a two-day program full of art, history and music
- Monterey County Pops! to support a new music mentorship program and free public concert in collaboration with the King City High School music program
- Partnership for Children to increase access to medical care for children with serious illnesses and support their families
- Portola Butler Continuation High School to purchase robot kits to teach science, technology, engineering and math in a fun, hands on way
- Rancho Cielo to support education and career training for South County youth
- Salinas Valley Fair to bring local youth to experience the Salinas Valley Fair and its STEM exhibits
- San Antonio Elementary School for Bringing History to Life, a sixth-grade field trip to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose
- Sol Treasures to provide student scholarships for the 2020 Children’s Musical Theatre production
- Sun Street Centers to help furnish the new King City Sober Living Room, an affordable living program for help adults live a substance-free life
- Youth Music Monterey for South County Strings, free string instruction for students residing in South Monterey County
About the Southern Monterey County Foundation
The Southern Monterey County Foundation was established by area residents to support programs and services for the communities of Southern Monterey County. Formed in 2014 as an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the SMCF is to raise funds locally to strengthen communities from King City to points south.
It is guided by an advisory board of local residents who have a deep understanding of regional community needs. Grantmaking is made possible by the support of local individuals, families and businesses. In 2019 Chevron was a major donor, gifting $10,000 to the SMCF.
