The James Bliss & Annette Sward Forestry & Nursing Scholarship awards scholarships to students from Monterey, San Benito or Santa Cruz counties who are pursuing post-secondary programs in nursing, fire science, forest conservation/management or paramedic/EMT. Since its creation in 2006, the fund has awarded over $170,000 in scholarships to 160 students.

Each year, eleven students from the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing at Monterey Peninsula College are awarded a $1,000 scholarship. The school offers the associate of science degree leading to RN licensure, in partnership with the Community Hospital Foundation.

Our students are so very fortunate to benefit from a community of caring donors, such as the Bliss-Sward family, and the efficient administration of the awards by the Community Foundation for Monterey County! The investment will prove beneficial beyond these students, however, as they in turn will care for the community.  Many thanks! -Laura Loop, Director, Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing

This scholarship will allow me to have some financial breathing room for my third semester of nursing school, I have been told this will be the most challenging so my gratitude is great. – Nikki Uchida

The generosity that these student experience by receiving a scholarship also motivates them to give back.
