Community Foundation for Monterey County grants $19.2 million in 2019, Surpasses $200 million total grantmaking

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – People who partnered with the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC) in their philanthropy set a new mark for generosity in 2019.

Grants totaling $19.2 million were awarded to more than 890 nonprofit organizations thanks to caring individuals, families and businesses who work with the CFMC to create charitable funds. The grants brought the cumulative total to more than $205 million since granting began in the 1980s, the CFMC announced.

Grants fund critical needs and causes in the Monterey region and beyond. The $19.2 million granted grants sets a new record, an increase of $500,000 over the previous record $18.7 million granted in 2018.

Grants helped inspire and educate young artists and musicians, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, improve literacy, care for animals, protect the environment, and help students fund a college education.

Approximately $5.9 million of the total grantmaking came from donor advised funds, through which people support a wide range of causes.

Proceeds from the annual Monterey County Gives! campaign accounted for $5.3 million of the total. Monterey County Gives! is a partnership of the Monterey County Weekly Community Fund, the CFMC and the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. $1.43 million scholarships helped create opportunity for 371 local students, thanks in part to the College Futures Monterey County program and companies with employee scholarships.
