Caring for Community: Birt and Kathleen Johnson, Jr.

Birt Johnson, Jr. and his wife Kathleen are deeply committed to their community. They are both children of career military families who believed Monterey County represented one of the best places to raise their families.

Giving Time and Treasure

Birt has been active on many local boards of directors, including the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC), where served as the Board Chair in 2019 and 2020. “I am proud to have served and support a few of the many deserving nonprofit organizations across our diverse county: Monterey Peninsula College Foundation, Center of Community Advocacy, United Way for Monterey County, The Village Project, Inc., and Monterey County Pops!,” Birt said.

We are committed to making our community a better place for all.” – Birt Johnson, Jr.

The couple worked with the Community Foundation for Monterey to establish a donor advised fund to make grants to local nonprofits. Says Kathleen, “Birt and I chose to open a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation because we have long believed a caring community is one that gives hope to individuals or nonprofits in need of support.”

“We feel good about working with the foundation because they carefully listen to understand your intentions and offer varied options with established nonprofits,” adds Birt.

A Personal Approach

Birt and Kathleen appreciate the Community Foundation’s personal approach saying, “We trust them as a partner in philanthropy because they care. They provide an efficient and effective way to reach multiple nonprofits that are meaningful to us.”

The Community Foundation is a trusted and valued resource serving the many communities of Monterey County.

About the CFMC they said, “The Community Foundation represents hope.”

About Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund is a simple, flexible way to give back.

  • You make a gift to the CFMC and receive an immediate tax benefit. A fund is established in your name, in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose.
  • You recommend grants from your fund to support the causes and organizations you care about.
  • You can make grants to organizations throughout the country and internationally.
  • Take advantage of our professional staff’s deep community knowledge to inform your grantmaking.

A donor advised fund can be created quickly and easily with a gift of $5,000 or more. The CFMC is a resource that provides personalized service to help you meet your philanthropic goals. All administration is taken care of by CFMC staff. Donor advised funds can also be included in a planned gift.
