With causes of importance from heart health care to education and the arts, William H. Tyler III continues to make a lasting impact in the lives of Monterey County residents through his generous volunteer board work and philanthropy.

The Pebble Beach resident was named the Community Foundation for Monterey County’s 2016 Distinguished Trustee at the foundation’s Celebration of Philanthropy October 20 at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. The award honors those who have who have demonstrated philanthropic leadership in supporting nonprofits in Monterey County.

Tyler epitomizes the philanthropic spirit by giving generously to a wide variety of nonprofits in the areas of education, health and the arts in Monterey County and beyond.  As the Distinguished Trustee recipient, Tyler was able to designate $10,000 from the CFMC to the nonprofit organizations of his choice. He chose to present grants to the “Read to Me Project” in memory of Peter Mollman and to “Franciscan Workers’ of Junipero Serra”  for the Chinatown Health Services Project in memory of Hugh Barton.

About Bill Tyler

Tyler grew up in El Centro, California and received a B.A. and M.A. in Economics at U.C. Berkeley. In the military he served three years as a pilot. He was Western States Superintendent of Agencies for U.S. Life Insurance Company, Vice President of Sales for Sun Life Insurance Company (now SunAmerica) and President of Teledyne life insurance subsidiaries in Kansas City and Los Angeles. He is currently owner and founder of a historic properties and preservation company, Resource Management Group.

Bill and Susanne Tyler

Tyler and his wife, Susanne created the William H. and Susanne S. Tyler Pathway Donor Advised Fund at the CFMC and the Tyler Visiting Fellowship in Residence Fund at the CFMC to support visiting professors at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies.

Because of his personal experience in knowing the importance of outstanding cardiac care, the Tyler Heart Institute at Montage Health (formerly Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula) is named in his honor thanks to his philanthropic leadership. He inspired others to follow suit to create an exceptional suite of services for local cardiac care.

Giving Time – Board Service

Bill has served many notable nonprofits as: Past President of the Carmel Public Library Foundation, Board of Directors of the Carmel Bach Festival, Trustee of the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, Johns Hopkins University Libraries and Museums National Advisory Board, Cornell University Real Estate Advisory Board, Past President of the Board and Governor Emeritus of the National Winston Churchill Museum and Library, Trustee of Westminster College, Past Chairman for Planned Giving at Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel and Montage Health Foundation Advisory Board. He was the 2013 Recipient of the Carmel Rotary Club J.O. Handley Community Service Award.
