It’s Scholarship Season!

More than $800,000 Available for 2018

The Community Foundation for Monterey County is pleased to announce that more than $800,000 is available for scholarship applicants through over 40 scholarship programs in 2018. Students can apply through our online system through one application for up to 30 different scholarship programs. The application period begins January 5, deadline to complete an application is March 16, and recipients will be announced by the end of April 2018.

Students interested in applying for a scholarship must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application. These forms make students eligible for federal and state financial aid, including a Pell grant of nearly $6,000 and a Cal Grant of up to $12,000.

Visit our Scholarship Resources page for more information about how to research college, apply for aid, and succeed in school.

CFMC Scholarships Continue to Grow

As a one-income family this will help lessen the burden of my tuition on my parents. I’m a first generation student and most of my family members have never attended college. I’m excited because, being the first to attend a university, I am setting the bar pretty high for my brothers. – Eloy Cruz, College Futures Monterey County Scholarship Recipient, UC Santa Barbara

From 2016 to 2017, the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC) dramatically increased the amount of scholarship. In 2016, the CFMC awarded 120 scholarships totaling $370,000. In 2017, those figures grew to 225 scholarships totaling $750,000.

Reaching Students Throughout Monterey County

A large part of scholarship growth comes from College Futures Monterey County, a collaboration between the CFMC, the College Futures Foundation, and CSU Monterey Bay. Students at high schools with the lowest rates of college attendance are supported with training on financial aid, financial literacy, college application, and academic preparedness.

These students are eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to $5,000 per year for two years. In 2017, College Futures Monterey County awarded $260,000 to 65 students at Alisal, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, North Monterey County, Seaside, and Soledad High Schools.

College Support = Community Support

There are also many scholarship programs established by individuals and families to benefit local students.

  • The Hugo and Dolores Tottino Family Scholarship was established by the Tottino family to award scholarships to students at North Monterey County High School with financial need.
  • Every year since 2001 the Carmel High School Class of 1952 has awarded a scholarship to a student with financial need who has made a significant contribution to their community.
  • For the first time this year, the newly-created Jess Harrison Family Scholarship will award a scholarship to a graduate of King City High School who lives in the south county city of San Ardo. These opportunities, and many others, are available to students through our online application.

The CFMC is looking forward to another year of supporting students to get to and through college, pursue their dreams, and improve our community.” – Josh Warburg, CFMC Program and Scholarships Officer
