MISSION AND HISTORY OF THE

MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (MAP)

The mission of the Management Assistance Program (MAP) is to improve and expand access to organizational capacity-building resources for non-profit organizations in Monterey County.

MAP began in 1996 after an extensive needs assessment involving non-profit staff, Board members, volunteers, and professionals in non-profit organizational development in the region. It was initially supported by a five-year grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and was integrated into the core programs of the Community Foundation for Monterey County in 2002.

A Fund Raising School participant shares her program needs with the class.

NONPROFIT RESOURCE LIBRARY

Development Assistant Kathryn Hart assists with FC Search.

Our Resource Library includes over 1000 books, workbooks, videos and other materials.  The contents are now on a Searchable Online Catalog and include board development, organizational assessment, fundraising, financial management, human resources and many other topics to help organizations strengthen their management practices. Materials are available for on-site use. Smaller collections are also available at the Salinas and Seaside public libraries.

As part of our Nonprofit resourse library, the Community Foundation has become a Cooperating Collection of the

Foundation Center.  Cooperating Collections are free funding information centers that provide a core collection of Foundation Center publications and a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers. These materials include the Foundation Center's serachable Directory (FC Search) on CD-ROM. Classes on how to use this directory are scheduled periodically.  A personal computer is available on-site to use this tool and to conduct internet searches. The Library also features the Grantmaker's Survey, a booklet produced by the Community Foundation for Monterey County with brief descriptions of local private funders. A VCR is available to review videos.

WORKSHOPS

Workshop participants discuss and brainstorm ideas.

The training program seeks to strengthen organizations by strengthening the skills and talents of their Board members, staff and volunteers, and to expand the management talent pool available to nonprofit organizations in our region. Workshops are given in the spring and fall and cover a wide variety of topics, with a focus on Management Development, Fund Development and Board Development. Special in-depth training programs, such as an intensive course in fundraising skills, grassroots leadership, or business development, are arranged as the need arises. Workshop descriptions and registration are available online.

STANFORD ALUMNI CONSULTING TEAM

The Stanford Alumni Consulting Team (ACT) is an organization of graduates of the Stanford Graduate School of Business which offers pro-bono management consulting services to the nonprofit community.  Since its founding, ACT has assisted more than 350 nonprofit agencies through the services of more than 1000 volunteer consultants.

Services are provided to nonprofits in all fields, including the arts, environment, education, health care and social services.  Functional support can be offered in many management areas, such as business plan review, budget analysis with peer comparisons, staffing reviews and support alternatives, brainstorming in problem areas, marketing, solicitation of grants and others. Local nonprofits that wish to receive consulting from ACT should be aware that this arrangement requires a significant commitment of the nonprofit organization's staff time.

Although ACT started as a San Francisco Bay Area organization, a Monterey county chapter was formed in 2005. This group collaborates with the Management Assistance Program (MAP) of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. The local team successfully completed two consulting projects in 2005, three in 2006 and 3 in 2007. The 2008 application deadline is January 28, 2008 2008.  To apply, click here
