Women and girls make up 47.9% of the population of Monterey County (numbering more than 194,000 of a total population of 410,370 in 2009), a rate that is somewhat higher among elders age 65 and over (among whom 56.6% were female).
The median age of Monterey County residents (regardless of gender) is 32.5 years. Half of all local women are between the ages of 25 and 64.
The majority of the overall population in Monterey County (males and females) is Hispanic or Latino (52.1%), with non-Hispanic whites representing the second largest racial group in the County (34.5%). African-Americans make up 3.3% of the population, Asians comprise 3.3%, and people of mixed racial heritage account for 3.4% of local residents.
