The Legacy of a Scholarship
Kier Memorial Scholarship Fund
Sam Kier and Lou Godfrey, with their siblings, grew up in a family enriched by a dedication to education and all the arts. They wanted to pass this gift to future generations, but found no easy way of doing so until they contacted the Community Foundation.
Lou: We tried to establish a bank account, but were told we should set up our own non-profit. We tried to “piggyback” with a PTA, but that went nowhere! Then our financial advisor recommended that we talk to the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Everything after that has been wonderful.
Sam: Our parents sacrificed so we could be educated, and our mother, a staunch supporter of public schooling, suggested that we plan a scholarship. Of the five brothers and sisters, three are teachers and three graduated from the high school where the scholarship is offered. Our whole family each kicked in part of the funding.
Lou: I can remember all of us sitting by the fire as kids and reading the complete works of Dickens. Now, we participate in the award ceremonies at the high school and see those hopeful eighteen-year-old faces ready to tackle the world. I hope this endowment will keep going and growing for a long time.
Sam: We are pleased by the personal attention and reports we get, and our fund’s earnings are much better than we as individual investors could achieve.
