2010 Census

Thank you for your continued support and efforts during this final stretch.  This information is valid through the door to door enumeration period ending July 10, 2010. Thank you to Lydia Zendejas, Central Coast Regional Coordinator – Census ya es hora ¡HAGASE CONTAR! for the information. Please get the word out that the Census is simple, safe, and everyone counts!

As we move forward in this final phase of the campaign we encourage each one of you to continue to communicate the importance of Census participation and what it means to our community.  We urge each of you to provide vital information on the enumeration period and how to identify enumerators.

Please see this factsheet and talking points on this enumeration period that we encourage you to reproduce, link to your website, and distribute within your partners, affiliates, and networks. This factsheet is completely bilingual and available for mass reproduction.

Low-income populations, the elderly, children under 5, racial minorities, and recent immigrants are all at greater risk for being under undercounted. The Census’ message for all residents in your community is: It’s Easy, It’s Safe, It’s Important. The Census is the driving underlining force for your community and results in: Money, Power, Justice.

FOR NONPROFITS:

Census data is used to allocate federal funds. Communities in Monterey County get about $1,600 each year for each person counted.

FOR CENSUS PARTICIPANTS:

If you did not return a Census form by April, 16, a Census worker may visit your home between May 1 and July 10, 2010.

What to expect from door to door enumeration:

  • The Census worker will have an identification badge and may have a black canvas bag with the official U.S. Census Bureau logo. You may ask to see another form of identification to confirm their identity.
  • The Census worker will never ask to enter your home.
  • A Census worker will never ask for your social security number, immigration status, citizenship status, or any financial information (such as credit card or bank account numbers).
  • If you are not certain about the identity of the Census worker, call 1-877-EL-CENSO, 1-877-352-3676.
  • Language Assistance - If the census worker cannot communicate with anyone in the household, they will show a card with short statement in 59 languages and ask the resident to identify their preferred language. The Local Census Office will assign census
taker or translator who can communicate with that household in the appropriate language.
  • It’s safe and confidential. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s Census questionnaire responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

Benefits to Nonprofits and Communities of Increasing Census Participation:

  • Census data determines Title 1 funding for schools, as well as college tuition grant and loan programs. Did you know that California has cut $17 billion in the education budget in the last two years? More cuts are expected as legislators attempt to balance a budget with a projected $20 billion deficit. Monterey County K-12 schools are slated to lose almost $94 million in the 2010-11 budget cycle, according to the Monterey County Office of Education. Obviously, the most vulnerable population are children, the future of Monterey County.

  • Census results allow for you to take inventory of the populations you serve and see whats changed in the last 10 years. If youre a community organization, you will want to see how the demographics of your particular area have changed, and how you might want to adapt your programming accordingly. You can also seize this as a fundraising opportunity. For example, if your targeted population increases, or if government support for your programming dries up, you can try to capitalize on these changes as an opportunity to reach out to potential funding partners.
