What are the Community Foundation’s core grantmaking strategies?
The strategies are Arts, Culture & Historic Preservation, Community & Social Services, Animal Welfare, Environment, Health, Education. In addition, we have created a new Opportunity Fund that will address essential safety-net needs, such as food and shelter, and seed innovative ideas.
How did you pick the strategies?
We conducted an extensive process to review best practices, identify key issues facing our region and gather research. We conducted a thorough review to select the most critical areas in which we could have an impact.
Who decided on those strategies?
Our board of directors approved the strategies, which were recommended by Foundation staff.
How much do you plan to award in grants?
We expect to award $6-8 million from our endowment fund over the next year. That is the same amount we have awarded in the past.
Where can I get more information about applying for a grant?
Our website, www.cfmco.org, has a schedule of available grants. Additional information will be released through 2010.
What are the application deadlines?
Each grant has its own deadline. Please check our website for a full schedule.
How do I obtain a grant application?
Grant applications are available on our website. Printed copies will be available at CFMC information sessions.
When will the grants be awarded?
We award grants throughout the year. Some grant applications received after November each year may be paid at the beginning of the following year.
What are the geographic restrictions for funding under the new guidelines?
To be eligible to apply for a grant, your organization must have a significant presence in Monterey County. Organizations headquartered outside Monterey County must demonstrate service to the area.
Can organizations apply for donor advised funding?
Organizations may not apply directly to donor advised funds established by individuals or families. However, the community foundation does bring funding ideas to the attention of donors throughout the year.
My group doesn't have tax-exempt status. Can I still apply?
Groups that do not have tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code must use a fiscal sponsor in order to apply. If you are looking for a fiscal sponsor, please contact our Grants Administrator at 831.375.9712 x116.

The Foundation is pleased to offer technical assistance with applications. We conduct regular How to Apply Workshops, and we welcome your questions.
