Did you know?
- Nearly 30% of women over 25 don't have a high school diploma.
- Each year close to half our newborns have mothers with less than a 12th grade education.
- Fewer than 3 in 10 girls graduating from public high schools have completed the requirements for entering a California state college or university. That's 11% lower than statewide averages.
- The median income for men who work full-time is 28% higher than for women who work full-time.
- Nearly 1 in 4 women between 18 and 24 lives below the federal poverty level. To better understand how large the issue of poverty is for women in Monterey County, it should be noted that the federal poverty level does not account for regional differences. In 2002, Monterey County was the second least-affordable housing community in the United States.
- There are more girls in foster care then boys. While the numbers for both genders steadily increase each year, the percentage of increase is greater for girls.
- More than half the students attending local colleges are women.
- Women earn more under-graduate degrees than men, the number of women earning degrees is steadily increasing.
