Restricted Purpose Funds

One of the unique things the Community Foundation does is to hold Restricted Purpose Funds for the benefit of local non-profit agencies. The purpose of these funds is to provide a permanent, protected stream of operating income for agencies that donors wish to support over time.

This may appeal to some donors in that it provides an alternative to making a large lump sum gift to an agency.

It may also help the agency, in that many non-profits may not have the financial expertise needed to effectively and safely manage large, single donations.

Restricted Purpose Funds may also be established to benefit capital campaigns.

All of the Restricted Purpose Funds listed above are component funds of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. The Community Foundation expects to make payments from its endowment funds for the specified purposes and agencies in perpetuity. Should the purposes of the funds ever become obsolete or inconsistent with the needs of the community, or should any designated agency cease to exist, the Community Foundation¹s variance power allows it to redirect funding to the most closely related purpose or agency.

Field of Interest Funds

Field of Interest Funds are funds that have been established by the Community Foundation, sometimes in conjunction with donors, for granting to a broad area of interest rather than a single non-profit organization in a particular field. Field of Interest Funds are also endowed funds, meaning that they will continue to make annual grants in perpetuity. Grant decisions are made by the Community Foundation's Board of Directors, in accordance with guidelines that were created when a Fund was established.

Unlike grants from the General Endowment, however, grants from Field of Interest Funds are unavailable through competitive grant applications. Grant seekers are welcome to check with Program staff for all grants that may be available to them.

Scholarship and Awards Funds

The Community Foundation has a variety of Scholarship Funds which benefit various types of students in many different parts of Monterey County. Scholarship programs are managed by selection committees formed by Fund donors and not by the Community Foundation. Grants from Scholarship Funds are made directly to a school on behalf of enrolled students, and not to students directly.

Anyone interested in donating to an existing Scholarship Fund or in starting a new one should contact the Program staff at the Community Foundation for further details.
