CPE Forum: Understanding and Using Valuation Strategies

Join speaker John Prokey, Esq., Partner (Ramsbacher Prokey Leonard LLP) for “Understanding and Using Valuation Strategies.”

John W. ProkeyValuation, a combined fact and legal issue of great complexity and tax risks, is central to much of the estate and succession planning for high wealth families, especially those with closely-held business entities and substantial investment assets. Attorneys and CPAs must be aware of valuation issues and practical planning when selecting and working with business valuation appraisers. John Prokey will present key current valuation issues and consider developments in the Tax Court and appellate courts that impact on how we effectively structure and document entities, gift and estate transfers, and deal with IRS challenges. The detailed outline of John’s presentation will provide attendees with information on key judicial decisions and practical steps on making valuation strategies work for clients.

Speaker Bio

John W. Prokey, Esq., emphasizes in his law practice advising high-wealth individuals and closely-held business owners in tax, business and estate and succession planning. His law firm represents taxpayers at all levels of tax controversy, including IRS administrative audit and Appeals, and in the U.S. Tax Court. John is a frequent lecturer and guest speaker at numerous tax planning seminars and conferences throughout California and has authored many detailed articles and outlines on tax, estate and succession planning and tax controversy subjects. His speaking engagements have included the AICPA Advanced Estate Planning Conference, the CalCPA Advanced Estate Planning Institute, Annual Estate Planning Symposium and 2014 Tax Update and Planning Conference, as well as presentations to various estate planning councils and CPE Forums.

John is a member of the Taxation and Trusts and Estates Sections of the State Bar of California, currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Trusts and Estates Section. He is a member of the Santa Clara County, California and American Bar Associations, the Santa Clara County Estate Planning Council, and the Silicon Valley Bar Association. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree from Santa Clara University in 1994 as well as his Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1999, graduating “cum laude in undergraduate studies and from law school.
